Dark Green: Countries with both administrative and notarial procedures (de-judicialized)

Red: Countries with exclusively judicial procedures

Legend:

The color-coding system represents two main aspects of national certificates of succession or of the other instruments with similar function across European countries:

Red: the process for issuing the certificate is jurisdictional (or mainly jurisdictional);

Green: the process for issuing the certificate is non-jurisdictional (otherwise, there are both jurisdictional and non jurisdictional proceedings).

Legal Gender Recognition in Europe: Color-Coding System

The color-coding system represents two main aspects of legal gender recognition across European countries:

  • The primary color (Red vs. Green) indicates whether the process is jurisdictional or non-jurisdictional
  • The shade variation indicates the level of medical requirements

Non-Jurisdictional Procedures (Green)

  • Light Green: Self-determination
  • Green: Soft medicalization – requires medical assessment of gender dysphoria or proof of living as transgender
  • Dark Green: Strong medicalization – requires both assessment and treatment, typically hormonal

Jurisdictional Procedures (Red)

  • Light Red: Self-determination
  • Red: Soft medicalization – requires medical assessment of gender dysphoria or proof of living as transgender
  • Purple Red: Strong medicalization – requires both assessment and treatment, typically hormonal

Legend

The color-coding system shows if the protective measures of vulnerable adults are de-jurisdictionalised or not:

Red: The protective measures of adults are jurisdictional or mainly jurisdictional;

Green: The protective measures of adults are extra-judicial or both judicial and extra-judicial measures coexist).
